I love a good Family movie. The ones where you can all get excited about the upcoming movie and make it a Family night out. Popcorn, drinks, and some candy from the concession stand. Waiting in line with your family while everyone takes turn predicting what’s going to happen in the film. Then watching a good movie and laughing with your family throughout. That’s a great night.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day may be a mouthful, but it has soo much heart in it. Yes, it’s based on the book by that name, but as we all know that particular book is very short. You start off meeting the family:
Alexander (Ed Oxenbould)
Mom (Jennifer Garner)
Dad (Steve Carell)
Brother (Dylan Minnette)
Sister (Kerris Dorsey)
and of course the baby brother
Just like with every family some days are good and some days are not so good. We meet Alexander when he is truly having a terrible, horrible, no good very bad day. From morning to night. He has fell out of the bed, started a fire at school, embarrassed himself in front of his crush and it just spirals down from there. On this particular day everyone in his family is having a great day. Talk of promotions, proms and more at the dinner table. HOWEVER, at midnight it’s Alexander’s birthday and he happens to make a wish. He wants his family to understand what having a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is all about.
The next morning begins by everyone sleeping soundly in their beds. Alexander is the first one up and he notices the time and casually wakes up his parents with a, “Shouldn’t you be up by now”. PANIC ENSUES. Everyone has overslept and as someone who has done that before can attest it just ruins your day from the start. Then it’s time to follow everyone in the family.

Mom works at a publishing house and a big children’s book she has been working on comes out today. She has the hardest time even getting to work. ( As you can see from this picture ) Her bad day has begun and it gets worse as the day goes on. There is a HUGE typo in the book so she has to race across town to stop none other than Dick Van Dyke in a celebrity reading of the book. However, no one takes her seriously and you’ll have to watch the movie to see just how the typo is both funny and ohhhh not so funny for her.

Steve Carrel’s day as Dad isn’t any better. He’s having to be Fommy (Father+ Mommy) while going to a job interview. He also might have something happen where he catches on fire.
That’s just the adults! Can you imagine having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and having to pass your driver test, going to prom, or being the lead in a school play?
