When Hollywood Boulevard was still a quiet mix of homes and agricultural businesses, real estate developer Charles Toberman, often called the “Father of Hollywood,” envisioned a thriving theatre district there. During his lifetime, he erected 36 stylish buildings in the heart of Hollywood, including the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and three themed theatres, which he developed with Sid Grauman — the Egyptian, the Chinese, and the El Capitan.

The El Capitan Theatre debuted on May 3, 1926, as “Hollywood’s First Home of Spoken Drama.” That evening, limousines pulled up before the theatre’s elaborate cast-concrete Spanish Colonial exterior (designed by architectural firm Morgan, Walls, and Clements) and deposited Hollywood royalty, who were attending the play “Charlot’s Revue,” starring Jack Buchanan, Gertrude Lawrence, and Beatrice Lillie.

Inside, the audience enjoyed one of the most colorful and lavish interiors they had ever seen, featuring an elaborate $1.2-million East Indian design, created by San Francisco architect G. Albert Lansburgh.

I’ve had the pleasure to attend quite a few movies here in this Theatre and it is honestly the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. As soon as you see the neon lights outside and walk through the doors it’s takes you back to a time when cinema was an artform.I think having movies at the El Capitan help encourage that and show the younger generation that films are art.

The entire place has an art deco theme that is just majestic. There’s also a section on the upper level where you can see the El Capitan Hall of Fame brought to you by Kodak.

Our Tour Guide let us know something interesting about the story of the El Capitan:

What made this theater special is for the first 15 years of its life, it did only stage shows. The movie theater was the Chinese. So about 150 stage shows in the first 15 years. We went and looked at old Playbills and we looked up newspaper ads. All of the great names in the early years of the motion picture industry appeared on this stage. Names that we all recognize. Rita Hayworth, Clark Gable, Bob Hope. They all appeared on this stage.

Make sure to stop right next door at the Disney’s Soda Fountain and Studio Store.

a soda fountain

Disney’s Soda Fountain offers an old fashioned ice cream parlor experience, serving cones, sundaes, shakes, malts, freezes, floats, and old-time phosphates all available at the counter, full service tables, takeout, and at the sidewalk window on Hollywood Blvd.

The Disney Studio Store offers a large selection of old, new, and hard to find DisneDVDs and videos in addition to exclusive merchandise related to Walt Disney Studios’ films.

If your a Disney Geek like me then make sure to look up and you can see The Disney Vault!! No, not the REAL one, but still just as cool. Bottom line, if your looking for fun on Hollywood Blvd. take a look at both the El Capitan Theatre and Disney Soda Fountain.

    Hi Kasandria!

Wow! What a great experience you had! I would love to go and see Planes this fall with my little ones and then hop over to the Disney Soda Fountain for a treat (not that going to the El Capitan wouldn’t be ‘treat’ enough!).

I love the history behind it and all that there is to see, besides a movie. Great post! Thank you so much for sharing,

You have some great pictures, Kas! It’s funny–I didn’t think I had too many details about the El Capitan Theater until I started writing my own post–then I just couldn’t stop adding paragraphs!

It’s such a beautiful, interesting place with so much history. I feel like I could go back there 10 times and still not take in everything that place has to offer!
