Freedom. Safety. Love. Miranda vows to reclaim them–for herself, and for her children.

A widow and mother of six, Miranda Hanford leads a quiet, private life. When the pastor of her close-knit church announces his plans to move the entire congregation to another state, Miranda jumps at the opportunity to dissolve ties with Mason Chandler and his controlling method of ruling his flock. But then Mason threatens to unearth secrets from her past, and Miranda feels trapped, terrified she’ll be unable to protect her children.

College professor Jack Hanford is more than surprised when he gets a call from his estranged sister-in-law’s oldest son, Timothy, informing him that Miranda has taken a serious fall and he has been named legal guardian of her children while she recovers. Quickly charmed by Miranda’s children, Jack brings some much-needed life into the sheltered household. But his constant challenging of the family’s conservative lifestyle makes the recovering mother uneasy and defensive—despite Jack’s unnerving appeal.

As Jack tries to make sense of the mysterious Miranda and the secrets she holds so tightly, Mason’s pressure on her increases. With her emotions stirring and freedom calling, can Miranda find a way to unshackle her family without losing everything?

Bob and Michelle Duggar have captivated the curiosity of many with their 19 children, cable television show and being featured on the cover of People magazine. But their Christian practice, known as “Quiverfull,” can be suffocating for females whose husbands believe that a woman’s highest calling is to be an obedient wife who trusts God to keep blessing her with babies until her husband’s “quiver” is full of “arrows.”

Georgia-based writer Meg Moseley has written a novel based on “Quiverfull” and other Christian church practices that forbid women to go to college, to work outside the home and even vote. These women also are required to home school their children.

In “When Sparrows Fall” (Multnomah May 3, 2011) Moseley’s main character and her six children are trapped in this life. She finds an avenue back to independence after her husband dies and she discovers her pastor – who hangs a secret over her head – actually has his own scandal brewing.

Moseley’s book will unleash more discussion on these Christian practices and the questions surrounding “Quiverfull.” People who have abandoned “quiverfull” or patriarchal teachings now gather online at sites such as “No Longer Quivering,” “Quivering Daughters,” “That Mom,” “Razing Ruth” and several others.

Moseley is from Buford, Georgia and she homeschooled her three children. It is during homeschooling she discovered other families dealing with the “Quiverfull” practice. She belongs to a non-denominational Christian church and previously wrote a suburban column for the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper.

Wow! I would like to win this book because it sounds like such an amazing read just from the summary you posted. I am always looking for a good book to read and I am always interested in learning about different ways of life and religious beliefs. I think this would be the kind of book that may frustrate me, but at the same time I’d have trouble putting it down.
