As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

I`m a big believer in the fact that you MUST read the book version before you see the movie. I`d say about 98% of the time the book is the better version, but sometimes I am wrong. One movie coming out that I am excited about is Water For Elephants. I mean Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in a Circus?! What could be better than that. So I downloaded the book on my Literati. This book surprised me. I loved how it started out as Jacob as an old man in a nursing home and him re-living his life. Yes it was a little reminiscent of The Notebook, but more fantastical. There were a few times in the story I thought the author could have elaborated on more. After all we were there to hear more about the circus. The daily life. All in all I would recommend you reading this before the movie. It`s something a little different and I`m always looking for projects that make me think. Now let`s check out the trailer for the movie!

I had no clue that Robert was in a new movie – I will definitely have to check out the book!

I read this book and thought it was great! I hope the movie version keeps true to the book. I hate when movies are totally different from the book.
The book & movie sound enchanting. I love the circus and Reese Witherspoon. Thanks for reviewing it for your blog visitors.

I had seen the title of this book several places and wondered what it was about. I didn’t know there was a movie coming out–and I agree, I like to read the book first. I guess I need to find a copy.
I have that book but I have yet to read it. I need to pull it out NOW!
Sounds like a great book!

I’m sold just by the cover. Thank you!
Hi all, I’ve been reading all I could about this movie as I’m totally excited to see it. From everything I’ve read (from the director, from Sara Gruen, etc.) the movie is going to be VERY true to the book. Sara Gruen has given it her approval several times over and she and her family actually get to make a cameo appearance in the film as well. The book was fantastic. I couldn’t put it down – much like Kassie I read the book because I saw that the movie was coming out. I am actually a bit of a Rob Pattinson fan (mostly in things other than Twilight…I thought Remember Me was very well done, etc). So, when I saw that he was going to be in this movie I decided to check out the book. I’ve recommended the book to so many friends now that I can’t even count. If you’re interested, this book is available just about everywhere right now (in preparation for the movie of course) and is a quick and fairly easy read. I would definitely check it out if you haven’t and be prepared for (in many high ranking critic’s opinions) one of next year’s earliest Oscar contender films!
I’ve heard so many things about this book, and the movie looks pretty good too
I just started this book today! I can’t wait to see the movie as well!
