As you know I’m a reader and a picky reader at that. When I’m not reading about Vampires or the latest Stephen King novel, I enjoy reading about true life stories. Mostly how people overcome adversity or personal demons. I recently read and have the opportunity to share with you, my readers a book that is inspiring. The Bag Lady Papers: The Priceless Experience of Losing It All tells the truth life story of Alexandra Penney and how she went from having it all to being completely broke both in reality and mentally.
“Alexandra Penney, former editor in chief of Style magazine, always harbored a secret fear she would become a bag lady if she ever lost her life’s savings. She took steps to plan wisely for the future. Then she received a mind numbing phone call: all the money she had saved since she was 16 had vanished in Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme. Truly panicked about ending up with a tattered coat and rusty shopping cart, she started a blog for The Daily Beast. Here is her account of losing everything and the aftermath.”
Penney is a wonderful writer with a great sense of humor in a time when everything feels like it’s crashing down.

***I received a book to review***

I loved the book TEACHER by Slyvia Ashton Warner about her trials and triumphs while teaching Maori children in New Zealand.
My absolute favorite book about overcoming adversity(and also my favorite book of all time) is Closing Time by Joe Queenan. It is his memoir of being raised in an alcoholic/abusive home, and it is one of those books that is so painful to read that you can’t imagine how anyone has managed to not only live through it, but to live to tell the tale with humor and a surprising lack of bitterness.

The Glass Castle is my favorite book these days. It’s written by a woman whose childhood was filled with poverty, homelessness and parents who were mentally ill. She overcame many obstacles and I was really inspired by her story.
My fave would have to be “Dry” by Augusten Burroughs. He takes the dark subject of addiction and makes it funny-quite a feat!

One that I just recently read that was intriguing and engrossing written in comic book form was The Imposter’s Daughter by Laurie Sandell. It’s about a daughter that learns that most everything she was told by her father was a lie and how she found out and learned to deal with it.

I think the book that makes me press on the most in trying times is probably The Long Winter from the Little House on the Prairie series. Its a great book about how life keeps going one day at a time even in the worst of times.
