Only 8 days after a massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti, this morning at 6:03 a.m. another strong magnitude 6.1 aftershock struck Haiti. I have watched the news on CNN and all my local news channels and my heart hurts for that country. You see in 2004 I went to the Dominican Republic and on an excursion we drove past one of the Haiti borders. The guards there were armed with machine guns and machetes. As someone who grew up in rural Tennessee it shocked me to see the way that people were having to live in those countries. I felt guilty. Here I was staying in a nice resort lounging on the beach and right down the street people were going hungry and didn’t have clothes to wear. Now these same people are struggling even more. The devastation is inconceivable.
I am reminded of Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 today. I saw the world come to our aid when we were in need and I love how America comes to the need of other countries as well. Some people have said that we should be worried about our own country before we give aid to Haiti and while I understand the sentiment I can not do that. I can not look at this disaster and not give anything, but that is my own personal choice. Today I am going to donate $20 to Save The Children, $20 to Oxfam, and $60 to the Red Cross. It is not much, but it is what I can afford. Do I think it will solve the problems that were in Haiti even before this disaster? No, but it is what I am able to do at this moment and it is what is right for me.

This is so awful! It’s hard to watch all the suffering of these people on tv. The Haiti Telethon is tonight-I hope I get to watch some of it.
