Recently my 5 year old started Kindergarten. I was really worried about her. I was afraid I didn’t spend enough time “teaching” her and preparing her for the start of school. I had looked at different workbooks and then found Cedar Valley Publishing’s Let’s get ready for Kindergarten book. Not only did it have everything I was looking for to help teach her, but it had new and interesting techniques. We used it 3 times a week for the month leading up to the beginning of school. It made a HUGE difference. Isabella was ready to start and had a good understanding of the basics. We also have Let’s Get Ready For First Grade and will start working on that book closer to the middle of the school year. Overall I thought it was a good resource for those looking for a little help getting ready for school.

I learned that: children who learn about themselves and their world in secure, stimulating environments are more likely to become passionate life time learners than children who attend passive, product/goal oriented programs.

A tip that was given for teaching kids to read was, Practice getting kids to draw one page word picture association, such as draw: Tom has apples. I thought this was a great idea because kids usually love to draw and it is an easy way for them to associate the words with the pictures.

It is important to prepare your child for his/her first day ahead of time. Practice a routine everyday for about a week so the actual day isn't such a shock. thanks! kaitlin5m[at]yahoo.com

Practice, practice, practice. Repetition works.
Make reading fun with lots of picture books about repetition and rhyming patterns that are geared to “early reading”.

We should create safe, stimulating, open ended environments where children’s explorations lead to the creation of a firm and solid foundation for future learning, self confidence, and success.

I think that one of the most important points was that each child learns at a different pace.

I like the thought that Stacy had-that parents should be involved right from the beginning helping their child's education to flourish. She is a very wise person.
