As a main cost saving tip, I do not let myself or the family get invested in 1 brand for a given product. Ice cream is a good example. I purchase the brand on lossleader sale + coupons, and take home good quality, right ingredients, family satisfaction guaranteed. We have faves sure, but we don't eat storebrand with limited choice of flavors.

I save money at the grocery store by planning ahead and using coupons and club cards in conjunction with sales. I buy in bulk when it's cheaper and stock up on basic necessities when I can. I also look at the reduced price/clearance sections for things that I will be using right away. Also, I tend to buy private label and store brand products which tend to be cheaper than many other brand names.

  • marthajane said:

I make a list with the sale prices of items I'm interested in for both of the grocery stores I frequent. That way, if I see an unadvertised special, I can check to see if it's cheaper than the sale price at the other store.

Besides relying on the old standbys - coupons and shopper's card discounts at my favorite stores (like Kroger!) - I make it a vow never to go grocery shopping on an empty stomach (I always end up buying way too much if I do, and, even worse, I'll buy items that aren't on sale just because I'm craving them). I also try to stick to a list but stock up on deeply discounted items, especially ones that are easy to freeze or store. Thanks for the giveaway!

Coupons, coupons, and more coupons. I clip them every weekend from the newspaper, print them from manufacturer web sites, and print from bricks, smartsource, etc. Catalina coupons are great too. Since we're not picky eaters, I always shop sales instead of bringing a static list of stuff to buy... buy in bulk when possible (as long as ppu (price per unit) is cheaper than regular size stuff). Generics/store brands are good alternatives for most things. Loyalty club cards also save lots of money. Thanks for the great contest!

I try to match the sales with coupons. Plus there are many internet sites that help matching them so you can save a bundle!
    Thanks so much!

I always try to combine sale items with coupons, I get a lot of free or really cheap items that way.

I never go to the store when I'm hungry. Always shop with a list. And always check out the corner where they put the marked down stuff. Thanks for the contest.

I sign up for the e-mail list of manufacturers like Kraft, Pillsbury, things like that. Not only do they send me great recipes through e-mail I get some great coupons. A lot of times if its a new item I will get a free refill or something like that.
